CONVERSION FRICTION
Conversion friction: how to find it, name it, and price it.
“Friction” usually means UX friction — too many fields, too many clicks. That is real, and it is a design problem. The friction that survives good design is different: the buyer understands the interface perfectly and still cannot decide.
Conversion friction is anything that stops a buyer who wants to proceed from proceeding. Two kinds: mechanical friction, which a designer removes once for everyone, and decision friction, which is specific to one buyer at one moment and cannot be designed away in advance. Yesward addresses the second kind.
HOW TO FIND IT
Funnel analytics show where. They cannot show why.
01 · DROP-OFF RATE
Tells you the step
Necessary and not sufficient. Two buyers leaving the same step can have opposite problems.
02 · SESSION REPLAY
Tells you one story
Rich and unscalable. You cannot watch 12,000 sessions, and the ones you watch are the ones you chose.
03 · SURVEYS
Tells you what people say
Answered mostly by people who did not leave, about a decision they have already rationalised.
04 · FRICTION HYPOTHESIS
Names the blocker, per session
One of five friction families, with a confidence score and the signals behind it — on every session, including the ones you do nothing about.
THE TRAP
Adding a helper to every step is not friction reduction.
A tooltip on every field
Visual noise for the 90% who did not need it, to serve the 10% who did.
A chat bubble on every page
Moves the cost of your unclear page onto the buyer, who now has to ask for the answer.
A progress-nudge sequence
Optimises the feeling of momentum, not the resolution of the blocker.
THE DISCIPLINE
One buyer, one blocker, one response, one receipt.
Name the friction before choosing a response
Five families, thirteen named frictions, each with the signals that suggest it and the levels permitted to address it.
Escalate only on evidence
Confidence below threshold means silence. Higher levels cost more trust, so they require more evidence.
One dismissal ends the session
A single ✕ suppresses every surface for that visit, and the promise is written on the surface itself.
Measure friction resolved, not messages shown
Per-friction incremental margin against the holdout — which is also how a losing response gets retired.
HOW YOU WILL KNOW IT WORKED
One number, one interval, one honest denominator.
Every problem on this page is measured the same way: eligible sessions randomised before treatment, a share permanently withheld, and the difference reported in contribution margin with its confidence interval and its data-quality notes.
